Texas State Fair

We decided to brave the bad weather and head to the Texas State Fair this weekend.  We planned to peruse the fair for a few hours and then split up so that Frank could take Frankie to the football game and I would take Lily inside A/C for a few hours, but unfortunately the weather thwarted those plans.  As soon as we split up, it started pouring rain, and Lily and I were stuck in the car show, while Frank and Frankie were stuck in the stadium with no football.

It was amazing to see the difference in Frankie from last year to this year.  Last year he could barely ride the rides, he could only ride with one of us, and he was really scared.  This time, he was able to ride a bunch of rides by himself, and he even rode one "super fast" ride with Daddy.  I think he had a blast!  We also enjoyed a Fletcher's corn dog and a few of the newer fried foods:  the bacon fried cinnamon roll and the Texas fireball, which was kindof like a fried jalapeno popper.  Both kids passed out on the way home, and then we watched the Texas Aggies beat Arkansas.  It was a great family day!

Here are a few pics from the fair:

Tummy time

Lily has really started to enjoy tummy time these last few days, really just since she has learned how to roll onto her tummy and back to her back.  It seems like only a week or two ago that she would lay on her stomach and cry, refusing to even try to lift her head up.  Now, she can lift it all the way up, and she often sits there propped up on her elbows looking around the room for the longest time.  Frankie was really early hitting most of his milestones, but, so far, baby girl has him beat....we will see if this trend continues!

Here are a few more pics from tummy time this week:

Mommy update

Tonight I registered for the Dallas half marathon on December 8th!  I ran this same marathon (the full, not the half) in 2008, and it was pretty awful.  I was great with my training at the beginning, but I did not follow the training regiment nearly as diligently toward the end, and the second half of the marathon was pretty tortuous.  I swore I would never do another full marathon again after that race.  However, I found the first half of the marathon to be quite enjoyable, and I am very excited to run this race!  Frank suggested I run a half marathon one night a couple of weeks ago when I was complaining about my weight.  That night I looked up training programs and local marathons, and I found a marathon that was exactly 12 weeks away, which was just the amount of time I needed to complete my training program.  I started my training the next day--this was last Tuesday--and I was really surprised with how easily I was able to run three miles that first day.   I am now two weeks into training, and I am feeling great!  I really hope that I will be able to stick with the training program once I go back to work.  Lily is making it very challenging since she has been sleeping so poorly, which equals Mommy sleeping bad too!

Speaking of baby weight, I am still about 3-5 pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight, and 8-10 pounds over my goal weight.  I can fit back into my pre-pregnancy pants, but they really only look presentable if I am wearing spanx underneath.  I still have a long way to go before I will be happy with my body, but I am hoping all of this running will be a big step in the right direction.

I am scheduled to go back to work on October 14th, which is just over two weeks away.  I am both sad and happy about this, but mostly sad. I am really enjoying my days at home with Lily, and I am sad that I am going to have to give those up so soon.  She is at such a fun stage right now, and I am going to miss her sweet noises, smiling face, and constant rolling over.  I am going to miss our sweet morning walks and dressing her up and taking her picture.  Today I visited the infant room at her school (the same school Frankie goes to) , and I was happy to see that the babies in the room were all happy.  It really seemed like a good environment for her.  As sad as I am to say goodbye to my days at home, I am also happy to be getting back to work.  I feel like I get pretty lazy when I am not overextended, and I am ready to get back into a good routine and be busy again.  Of course, I am sure everything is going to swing in the opposite direction, and I am not sure how I will be able to get everything done when I am back at work.  I am very scared about that, so I am trying to do as much as I can now when I still have time!  I really, really hope that Lily (and I) do not have as rough of a year health wise as Frankie and I did his first year in day care.  I am going to need each and every bone of my body to be healthy in order to handle taking care of my job, my house, and my two kiddos.

She's called "Sistee Lily"

Baby Lily
Baby Lily
Baby Liliana Mae
We are so excited to see you
And we're happy you're here today.

And we're happy you're here to stay.

Frankie has started to call his sister "Sistee Lily."  He is sooooo cute with her.  He always wants to give her hugs and kisses.  He wants to tell her good morning and good night.  And he wants to hold her and pick her up and make her bottles (not always the best idea).  We started singing this song to Lily before she was even born, and we continue to sing it to her when she gets fussy in the car.  Frankie loves to sing to his sister.

We have been spending the last few evenings outside in the backyard, since the weather has been absolutely beautiful!  Lily seems to enjoy being outside just as much as Frankie does.  I am so happy for the fall weather and for everything that comes with the fall season:  football games, pumpkin, boots, and lots of snuggling.  Here are a few pictures from over the last few days:

Houston trip for Great Grandpa's 90th birthday

This weekend I took the kids to Houston for Great Grandpa's 90th birthday!  Frank had reserves this weekend, so he could not come with us.  We missed him a lot, but we had a great weekend with family and friends.  I was very apprehensive about the drives to and from Houston, and it turned out that one of them was pretty terrible and one of them was awesome.  The drive to Houston started off great, and we made it all the way to the Woodlands with three successful, quick potty trips, and Lily sleeping the whole way.  I had to pull over again in the Woodlands for Frankie to go potty, and I decided to go to a Burger King with a playground so that I could feed Lily and let Frankie play.  It was a long stop--almost 45 minutes--and in that time, the weather got yucky and the traffic got horrible.  It took me almost two hours to get to Sugar Land from the Woodlands, and I was in traffic pretty much the whole way.  I was dying, but thank goodness both kids slept during most of that time.  If I had been stuck in the traffic with two screaming kids, I may have gone crazy.  The drive home was absolutely perfect--both kids slept almost the entire way (Frankie woke up in downtown Dallas, but Lily slept until we got to our house), Frankie did not have to stop to go potty and he did not have an accident, and we made it home in under four hours!  Plus, Daddy was home when we got here, which was a nice surprise.

We came to Houston for my Grandpa's birthday, since it was a BIG one and he was turning 90 years old.  My aunt Barbara flew down from New Jersey, and it was her first time to meet Lily.  It was great to see them, and I know they were really happy that we made the trip. My dad cooked a delicious meal with filets, and Frankie and my mom made a delicious birthday cake.  After we sang Happy Birthday to my grandpa, Frankie surprised everyone by blowing out the candles with one big blow.

A bunch of my friends also met Lily this weekend.  We met Brooke and Katie and Bennett and Leighton at Chic-fil-A for a lunch playdate on Friday, and Corey and Diana each came separately over to my parents' house to catch up and meet the baby.  It was so nice to see everyone!

Rolling, rolling, rolling

Lily has mastered rolling over from her back to her belly, and she has decided to perform this trick non-stop when she is in her crib.  She first did it yesterday morning.  Frankie and I heard her fussing in her crib, so we went to her room and found her lying on her tummy.  It was so cute, because Frankie was SO EXCITED.  He yelled, "Good job baby girl!!!" and he told Daddy that Lily rolled over.  However, last night, it stopped being cute and fun, because every time I put her down in her crib, she would roll over on to her tummy and get upset.  I had to go in there probably 6-8 times last night to roll her back over.  I remember this being a brief problem with Frankie and that after a couple of nights of helping him roll back over he figured out that he liked sleeping on his tummy and we did not have any more problems.  I hope baby girl also figures that out soon, because Mama is tired!!!

Happy Birthday Frank!

I want to wish a very happy birthday to my wonderful husband Frank!  This has been a tumultuous year for him--probably the toughest since I have known him.  He has experienced family tragedy with the injury of his brother and personal hardship with the loss of his job.  However, he also led and witnessed amazing generosity as he raised more than $100,000 for Monte and also helped him obtain his new home in College Station.  He secured a new, much better job that he enjoys, and he welcomed a beautiful baby girl into his family.  He is the most selfless man I know, and he is a wonderful husband and father.   I am so lucky to get to spend my life with him, and I can't wait to see what else life has in store for us.  Frank loves adventure, and I am blessed to be able to share this adventure with him.

We celebrated Frank's birthday with a cake that Frankie helped make and decorate.  He was SO EXCITED about Daddy's birthday.  Here are a few pics of the celebration:

Aggie/Alabama game

When I was in Seattle last week, Frank texted me and told me that a friend was giving us tickets to the Texas A&M vs Alabama football game this weekend.  This was a HUGE football game, and Frank was so excited about it.  I was shocked when he invited me to go with him, because it seems like I never get invited to these big sporting events.  Usually Frank goes with my Dad, or my Dad takes my brother or Steve, or my Mom...I am always stuck home watching the babies.  However, this time, my parents agreed to watch both kids so that Frank and I could enjoy the game together.  We invited Brooke and Mason, and were excited that they were able to join us.  On Saturday morning, we loaded up Mason's truck and headed out to College Station around 8:00 a.m.  We enjoyed several hours of tailgating in the extreme Texas heat, and then headed up to the stadium to watch the game.  It was a wonderful game, but unfortunately Texas A&M could not pull out the win.  It was a great opportunity to catch up with good friends and to return to College Station for such an exciting event.  Frank and I had a great time together, and we really appreciate my parents for watching the kids.  Apparently Lily was not very cooperative and pretty much refused to nap for them, so they were exhausted by the time we got home.  We got home around 11:00 p.m, and then Lily woke up at 12:30, 2:30, and then was up for the day at 7:00.  We were pretty exhausted yesterday, but we had a successful drive back to Dallas and all went to bed early last night.  On our way back, we stopped in Buffalo to look at a ranch property that I found a few months ago that we are in love with.  We have a long way to go before making that dream a reality....but it was nice to stop and indulge the dream.  Here are a few pictures from this weekend:

Quick trip to Seattle

I went to Seattle yesterday for a quick day trip so that I could interview for a new job.  One of my favorite partners at my law firm left to join a different firm (that is based in Seattle), and she has invited me to come join her at her new firm.  I had already come in and met with a bunch of people in the Dallas office, and yesterday I met with some of the labor and employment associates and partners in the Seattle office.  I really loved Seattle.  It reminded me a lot of both San Francisco and Chicago.  My hotel was downtown, right near the water, and after my interviews were done, I walked around a bit and saw Pike's Place Market, the waterfront, the original Starbucks, and an awesome shopping district. I loved Pike's Place Market.  Frank asked me to bring home some smoked salmon, and the guys at the fish places were hilarious and super friendly.  There were a ton of fresh flower markets there, and they were selling enormous, gorgeous bouquets of flowers for $10!  If you live in Seattle, there is no excuse not to have gorgeous fresh flowers all the time.

This was my first time to leave Lily overnight, and it was tough!  My mom came up from Houston to help watch her, and that made things easier.  Thank goodness Nana was able to come up and help, or else I am not sure how I would have been able to make this trip!

I was looking forward to this trip because I thought it would give me a chance to relax and at least get a good night's sleep...but it was really more exhausting than anything.  I had to get up very early on Tuesday for my 7:30 a.m. flight out of Dallas, and that combined with the time change made Tuesday a super long  day.  I was exhausted by about 8:00, so I ended up going to bed really early.  I had to get up at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday to catch my flight home, so I slept really crappy and kept waking up thinking I had overslept.  I was so excited to come home and see my family!  It was a long day, but hopefully I will hear some good news about this job soon.

Lily - three months!

Lily is three months old!  This makes her only nine months away from being one year old, and it means that I only have one more month left of maternity leave.  I am astonished by how fast time is flying by and how quickly Lily is growing and changing.  Yesterday was my first day/night away from Lily, and I missed her a lot.  She is a sweet soul, and she gives me the biggest, brightest smiles which absolutely make my days.  At three months, Lily is becoming more and more aware of the world around her.  She is finally starting to tolerate tummy time, and a couple of days ago she lifted her head up very high.  Frankie and I were laying on the floor next to her, cheering her on!  She is still eating only approximately 18-20 ounces of formula a day, and she is pretty consistently eating 4 bottles during the day and 1 bottle at night.  She usually barely eats anything of the final daytime bottle, but then she wakes up starving at some point during the night, usually around 1:30, but it can vary anywhere from midnight to 4:00 a.m.  She is sleeping at night from approximately 8:00 to 7:00, with one wake up in between where she chugs a bottle and goes right back to sleep.  Her naps are completely unpredictable and constantly changing.  She took a 5.5 hour nap last weekend, and I finally woke her up because I didn't want her to sleep all day!  Yesterday she took two three-hour naps, and the timing worked out perfectly, so that she did not fuss at all during the day.  I would love to make this her consistent routine, but I am sure she will change things up on me within the week.

One night last week she broke out of her swaddle and then fell asleep again once she wriggled an arm free.  I took this as a sign she may be ready to get out of the swaddle, so we tried swaddling with one arm out, and she slept great.  We are now swaddling with both arms out, and she seems to be sleeping more peacefully this way. Before, when she was completely swaddled, she would wiggle all around the crib at night, and you never knew where you would find her.  But now, with her arms out, she generally sleeps in the same spot every night and stays there.

She loves laying on her back and "talking" to you.  It is so funny, because it almost seems like she is carrying on conversations, as her "replies" are intoned just like regular speech.  She laughs, and she makes a really funny squeaking sound, which Frankie says sounds like a mouse (he is right!).  She loves to blow bubbles, and she drools a ton.  She loves to suck on her hands, and this is not a reliable sign of hunger, because she also does it when she is tired, and I think also just because sometimes.  She is now mostly wearing size 3-6 month clothes and size 2 diapers, and I think she is growing really fast right now and will probably move up to the next size soon.

When she gets really fussy or worked up, not much will calm her down.  We cleared out an entire room at Buca di Beppo last weekend when she had a screaming tantrum while we were trying to eat dinner.  She still sometimes has very fussy periods in the evenings, but I think those are usually tied to her being tired and not having a late afternoon nap.  She is generally not fussy at all most days.  She still loves her swing, her bouncy seat, and her play mat.  She now grabs for and holds toys and other objects.

She continues to be beautiful, unpredictable, and sensitive.  I am so excited to watch her grow, and I am glad that I get another month to bond with my sweet girl.

Monsters

Frankie is officially scared of monsters.  He has been talking about monsters sporadically for the last few months, but he has been talking about them nearly every day now for the last few weeks.  He is scared of monsters in his room when it is dark outside.  He has been waking up super early every morning, and, I think because he is scared, he has been literally running downstairs and into our bedroom to wake us up.  He actually came downstairs by himself one night last week and climbed into bed with us, which he has NEVER done before.  I asked him where he got the idea about monsters, and he said that there are monsters on his iPad.  He also seems to think there are monsters under his bed, and he told me that "Mommy" told him they were under there.  I know I never told him that...but I wonder if I said something like, "no monsters under the bed either," and that gave him the idea that monsters might want to hide out under there.  I think it is kindof cute that he is so scared, and I don't mind the early morning cuddling, but I do wish he would wait A LITTLE bit later to wake us up.  I suppose he is just trying to prepare me for when I go back to work.

Mickey Mouse

Frankie did not really watch much TV until Lily was born.  He used to watch his gigglebellies videos, and he has a few movies, but he usually just watches you tube videos on his iPad instead of watching TV.  However, since Lily has been around, I usually let him watch a show while I am feeding her, and he always wants to watch Mickey Mouse.  He is becoming a bit obsessed with the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse show, and now he also watches Mickey videos on his iPad.  He loves to say "Miska, mouska, mickey mouse!" at the beginning of every show, and he always jumps around and dances when they bring out the mouskatools and when they do the hot dog dance at the end of the show.  He calls Pluto "cloodle," and his favorite characters are probably Minnie and Daisy.  On a slightly related note, when I picked him up from school on Friday, two girls in his class were chasing him around the room with puppet animals, and he was screaming and laughing and having the best time.  His teacher told me, "he sure won't be a part of any little rascal's woman-haters club, because he LOVES the girls."  I am sure he is going to be a little heartbreaker!

Upstairs updates

Since I have been on maternity leave, we have been working on some updates to our home.  Frank (finally) decorated his office, we are having the master bedroom painted a beautiful gray/blue, and we are meeting with landscape architects to design an outdoor living space in our backyard that we hope to have completed this winter.  We have also rearranged and updated our upstairs.  When we made Frankie's room the new nursery for Lily, we moved Frankie into the old playroom (which is technically supposed to be a media room).  We then turned my old reading room into the new playroom.  This room is pretty small, but it is just big enough for some toy storage, a child's table and chairs, two bean bag chairs, and a few of Frankie's bigger toys, including his tool bench and home center.  I love having a room dedicated to his toys, and I am slowly working toward moving toys out of the living room and into the playroom.

The other big update we have completed includes three wrought iron fixtures we had installed upstairs.  We have three large openings in the walls upstairs, one in the new playroom and two in the loft area. There are wide ledges on each opening, which has caused us concern about the possibility of kids trying to climb up onto the ledges and possibly jumping or falling from the second story.  Multiple people in our families expressed this concern to us, so we started to brainstorm about different ideas of how to enclose the openings or otherwise eliminate the safety hazard.  Frank's dad had the idea of installing iron fixtures into the openings, and I loved that idea.  We ended up having three different iron inserts custom made to fit into the openings, and we absolutely love how they turned out.  I think they enhance the beauty of our home, along with remedying the safety concerns.
